Optical duo make a splash for charity

Two members of the team from a Didcot opticians took to the water this month (May) to take part in Swimathon 2022 to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie.

Patsy Smiles and Caitlin Whelan, who both work at Specsavers in the Orchard Centre, set themselves the challenge of completing personal goals – 5k for Patsy and 2.5k for Caitlin.  The pair smashed their targets and raised £400 for the two cancer charities.

‘I’m pretty chuffed with our efforts,’ comments 52-year-old Patsy who’s a dispensing optician at the store.  ‘I’ve been swimming for a while but have never swam 5k before – especially that quickly all in front crawl.’

Optical assistant Caitlin, (20), who has only done leisure swimming before, adds, ‘It was great to be involved in this challenge and to have Patsy to spur me on – she was a great motivator.  A big thank you to everyone who has supported us so far.’
