If you had asked Adela Garcia 15 years ago what she would be doing in 2018 she doubts the answer would have been be running a Didcot opticians, helping to look after the eyecare needs of thousands of local customers.
Originally from Spain and a former English teacher, Adela moved to Oxford in 2002 to help improve her language skills.  A move to Didcot with her boyfriend and now husband, introduced her to Specsavers - where she took up a role as an optical assistant in the newly opened store at the Orchard Centre.
After ja year Adela enrolled onto a dispensing optician course, completing her diploma qualification in three years, under the support of her store directors, Rukhsana Bi and Michael Nixon. She then went on to mentor other members of the team completing their studies before being promoted to store manager in 2014.
“I was responsible for the day-to-day running of the store, which meant dealing with all sorts of new challenges,’ says Adela. “I joined the Institute of Leadership and Management and completed two of their courses to help support me in this area.’
In 2016 Adela started on Specsavers Pathway course; a development programme that trains prospective Joint Venture Partners (JVPs).  And, after completing the course, was invited to become a director at the store in Didcot.
“I have always grasped any opportunity to develop myself and my team, so to become a director of the business really was the icing on the cake - I was incredibly honoured,” said Adela. “My journey demonstrates the commitment to development from both my leaders and from Specsavers as a whole. We have a fantastic team at Specsavers Didcot, many of whom have been with us for a long time and I’m proud to be one of them.’
